Propelled by four goals from senior
David Goodwin, including the game-winner with 34.6 seconds left in overtime, the De Smet Jesuit hockey team edged three-time defending champion CBC, 5-4, for the Mid-States Hockey Association Challenge Cup.
Trailing 4-2 early in the third period, the Spartans used a power play goal from Goodwin at the 2:26 mark to make it 4-3. Less than three minutes later, senior Joe Horak passed off to Goodwin who notched the hat trick to knot the game at four with 5:17 remaining in regulation.
Seconds into overtime, Goodwin nearly sent the throngs of De Smet fans home happy but his shot at the open net went wide. The two teams exchanged a series of shots as the clock ticked down, with Spartan goalkeeper Nick Herrmann knocking down each of the Cadets’ attempts. With just over 35 seconds left in OT, Goodwin snagged the loose puck off the boards and fired it toward the goal. Along the way it hit a few skates, but found the net and sent the Spartan fans into a frenzy.
The championship is De Smet’s 14th state title in hockey, a Mid-States hockey best, and the first since 2002. The hockey Spartans, coached by John Murray, Brian Dean and Arne Pappin, finish the season 19-3-6.
Fox Sports Midwest will re-broadcast the game several times through the end of February and March, including:
