Since accepting the first entering class in 1967, De Smet has established a tradition of athletic excellence. Beginning with a Mid-States Hockey championship in 1972, the Spartans have amassed an incredible 41 state championships in 13 different sports, including basketball, football, golf, cross country, tennis, soccer, lacrosse, volleyball, baseball, racquetball, rugby, swimming & diving and ultimate frisbee.
De Smet is a proud charter member of the Metro Catholic Conference, which fields competition in the sports of cross country, football, soccer, basketball, swimming & diving, wrestling, baseball, golf, tennis, track & field and volleyball. The Spartan athletic program has captured the MCC All-Sports Trophy 10 times since its inception in 1992, including eight of the last 10 years.
De Smet also provides unparalleled opportunities to participate, offering 19 different sports and 46 different teams. Last year, more than 750 students participated in at least one sport at De Smet.
In the fall, Spartan teams compete in cross country, football, soccer and swimming & diving. Winter sports include basketball, bowling, hockey, racquetball and wrestling. In the spring, De Smet offers baseball, golf, in-line hockey, lacrosse, rugby, tennis, track & field, ultimate frisbee, volleyball and water polo.
